Job Skills vs. Life Skills vs. Book Smarts vs. Life SimulationPosted on 05/23/2010
The purpose of an education is preparation for a student's future, the demonstration of alternate disciplines and fields of study, and provision of a strong background in several areas of general knowledge, and, it's hoped, the ability to reason and analyze.

Highlighting What's Right
Posted on 05/23/2010
The problem with stressing the positive approach to
teaching is that everything that is right seldom calls attention to itself
unless it is exceptionally right, novel. Since things that are right are taken
for granted, indeed expected by most people, student and teacher alike, then the
teacher’s job is to correct the student’s perceptions of correctness that are at
odds with standard rules. As a teaching technique, using samples which are
correct yields poor results. Stressing how some writer did a right thing only
prompts the student to emulate the author when confronted with the same
compositional structure. Emulation motivated by the possible reward of a good
grade is less motivational than avoiding incorrect structures to avoid bad
grades. What would be most preferable is to balance samples of good and bad
samples and stress whet to do and what not to do. Unfortunately, students are
more motivated to avoid bad grades. It is easier to know what is wrong than know
everything is right. Knowing what is right may include information that is wrong
and these misconceptions must be addressed, especially if they are prevalent in
the classroom. Bad news is more interesting, memorable, and usable than good
news. We expect correctness in the world and only pay attention when something
gets unbalanced.
