Taxes can be levied against everybody, though against some people--those benefiting from government entitlement programs--there is no expectation or hope of collecting.

All revenue-generating laws that penalize us for deciding not to use personal safety precautions have two true purposes (to take our money and to circumvent probable cause to look into our lives), a single ostensible purpose (to protect us from ourselves), and a single long-term outcome (to replace our personal discretion with the government's).

Gays in committed domestic partnerships and civil unions publicly demand the same rights, protections, and benefits currently extended automatically only to opposite-gender married couples.

The rest of us who don’t fall into any of these categories–not gay, not gay and in committed relationships, and not married–are left to fend for ourselves.

Forgetting other disadvantaged classes, special interest groups launch political movements without considering that many are subject to the same unjust government restrictions and laws.

Married couples in the U.S. are now in the minority, outnumbered by households of singles and unmarried heterosexual couples in blissful cohabitation. The rising median age of first marriage (26 years old on average in 2003) means more young people are seeking alternate ways of securing legal protections and benefits to bridge the gap until they get married.

So, not only unmarried gays, but also unmarried heterosexuals and singles and divorcees and widowers living alone or with platonic roommates should also be afforded the legal protections enjoyed by married couples.

Since so many Americans are adversely affected, laws that protect and limit receipt of benefits only to married heterosexuals cannot be termed anti-gay or gay-hateful. Such laws should be termed more descriptively as what they are, unjust, and protections that are automatically conferred to married partners should be made available to everyone.

Turns out that married opposite-gender couples automatically receive around 400 state government and 1100 or so federal government benefits, according to the General Accounting Office (GAO), just for co-signing marriage certificates.
